Sales of the Volkswagen Virtus Beat Those of the Hyundai Verna in March 2024
Volkswagen Virtus & Hyundai: Sales data from March 2024 suggests that the compact vehicle segment had a successful end to the fiscal year 2023–2024. The Volkswagen Virtus is at the top of the sales ranking, with the Hyundai Verna trailing closely after. Except for the Honda City, practically all compact sedans had positive month-over-month (MoM) growth in the previous month. The sales performance of each automobile in March 2024 is broken down here.

March 2024 | February 2024 | MoM Growth | Market share current(%) | Market share (% last year) | YoY mkt share (%) | Average sales (6 months) | |
Volkswagen Virtus | 1847 | 1631 | 13.24 | 27.87 | 17.71 | 10.16 | 1741 |
Hyundai Verna | 1716 | 1680 | 2.14 | 25.89 | 37.12 | -11.23 | 1865 |
Skoda Slavia | 1358 | 1028 | 32.1 | 20.49 | 15.56 | 4.93 | 1584 |
Honda City | 1116 | 1184 | -5.74 | 16.84 | 26.62 | -9.78 | 1318 |

Total | 6627 | 6004 | 10.37 | 99.99 |
Principal Learnings
- The Volkswagen Virtus was the best-selling compact sedan in March 2024, having sold over 1,800 copies. With a nearly 28 percent market share in the segment, Virtus has seen monthly sales growth of more than 13 percent.
- By just 131 units, the Hyundai Verna’s sales just missed outpacing those of the Virtus. While month-to-month sales were stable at over 1,700 shipments, the company’s year-over-year (YoY) market share decreased by over 11 percent.
- More than 1,300 people purchased the Skoda Slavia, a small automobile, in March 2024. The Slavia sold more than 200 fewer units last month than its average sales over the previous six months, even though it had the most month-over-month (MoM) growth of 32%.
- The sole small car in this group, the Honda City, saw a decline in monthly sales but managed to surpass 1,000 units sold. Additionally, the City’s YoY market share decreased by almost 10%. The change in variant-specific features that was announced in April 2024 is likely what caused this output decline, and the Honda sedan should soon resume its typical sales volume.
- In March 2024, the Maruti Ciaz—which is currently regarded as an obsolete model in the segment—became the least popular small sedan. Its monthly sales jumped by more than 100 homes last month, despite drawing fewer than 600 buyers.

Maruti Increases Manesar Plant Production Capacity To Up To 9 Lakh Units Year
- Maruti Boosts: One lakh units can be produced annually on a new assembly line at the Manesar factory.
- The Manesar plant produces the Ertiga in addition to other Maruti vehicles like the Brezza, XL6, Ciaz, and WagonR.
- This extra assembly line is available for Maruti to use in the production of its joint venture goods with Toyota.
- The automaker intends to Maruti Boost its annual production capacity to 40 lakh vehicles within the next seven to eight years.
Maruti has several manufacturing facilities in India, three of which are located in Manesar. Maruti has set up a new assembly line at Plant-A, the largest of the three plants, with a production capacity of one lakh vehicles annually.
The Manesar plant’s annual manufacturing capacity has increased to 9 lakh units thanks to this facility expansion. Maruti just passed the 3 crore unit production mark, of which 95 lakh vehicles were produced at the Manesar factory. The Maruti Ertiga was the first vehicle to be produced on this recently installed assembly line, which is currently operational.
The Maruti automobiles that will be produced on this new assembly line are currently unknown, however, because the Ertiga was produced there, the MPV is one of the models. Maruti also produces the Ciaz, XL6, Celerio, Brezza, WagonR, Dzire, and S-Presso automobiles in the Manesar facility.
In addition to increasing Maruti’s annual car production, this new assembly line may also assist reduce wait times—particularly if Maruti uses it to produce its shared goods with Toyota, which presently has lengthy wait times. For instance, the waiting period for the Toyota Rumion is currently up to 15 months.
In the next seven to eight years, Maruti Suzuki intends to raise its manufacturing capacity from the present 23.5 lakh units per year to 40 lakh units per year.
