Rear-wheel drive variants account for half of Mahindra Thar’s sales

  • Approximately half of the 6,000 Thars that Mahindra sells each month are rear-wheel drive (RWD) models.
  • The 1.5-liter diesel and 2-liter turbo-petrol engines are available for these RWD versions.
  • Mahindra can only produce a restricted number of 1.5-liter diesel engines at this time.
  • The rear-wheel drive versions may have longer waiting times as a result of this restriction.

In India, the most popular lifestyle off-road vehicle is the Mahindra Thar. Mahindra opened up the market for this off-road competent SUV last year by lowering the cost of models with rear-wheel drive. It was disclosed at a recent investor meeting that these rear-wheel drives Thar models account for almost half of the vehicle’s sales.

Statement from Mahindra

In response to a question regarding production capacity, Rajesh Jejurikar, Executive Director and CEO (Auto & Farm Sector), Mahindra & Mahindra, said during the investor meeting: “On Thar we have roughly out of the current sales that we do, which is about 6,000-odd a month, roughly half is four-wheel drive and the balance is two-wheel drive” The two-wheel drive is what many reservations are for.

One of Mahindra’s best-selling models in the nation is the Thar, with models with rear-wheel drive accounting for about half of sales. This might be because these versions are more reasonably priced, making this tough-looking off-road vehicle more accessible. Additionally, it appears that only around half of the Thar’s purchasers are interested in off-roading seriously and are instead purchasing the vehicle for its appearance, road presence, and performance.

Time Waits for Thar Rear-wheel Drive

Mahindra Thar

The rear-wheel-drive Thar wait times are not going to decrease anytime soon, despite Mahindra’s best efforts to keep them at a reasonable level. The Indian automaker has been increasing production across the board, but capacity problems with the engines further complicate matters for the Thar RWD versions. During the same investor meeting, Rajesh Jejurikar added, “We are not able to ramp up two-wheel drive production right now because the assembly line and manufacturing-related capacities beyond 3,000 are not there, only the engine-related capacity is.

The 1.5-liter engine, which transitions from rear-wheel drive to two-wheel drive, has a very specific capacity, so that will increase with time. Hence, that is the particular limitation on our ability to raise the Thar two-wheel drive’s volume.

The Mahindra Thar’s primary assembly and manufacturing capacities are centered on its 2-liter turbo-petrol and 2.2-liter diesel engines, both of which have been available from the vehicle’s 2020 introduction. Mahindra has not yet altered its manufacturing process, which will take time, and this new 1.5-liter diesel engine was only introduced last year exclusively for the Thar’s rear-wheel drive versions. Up until then, the waiting times for the rear-wheel-drive versions might go much longer because of this engine’s restricted production capacity.

The 1.5-liter diesel engine (118 PS/300 Nm) and the 2-liter turbo-petrol engine (152 PS/300 Nm) are the available engines for this rear-wheel drive model. For the turbo-petrol engine, a 6-speed manual and an automatic transmission are available, whereas the diesel engine only has a 6-speed manual gearbox.

There are two engine options for the four-wheel-drive versions: a 2.2-liter diesel (132 PS/300 Nm) and a turbo-petrol engine. Options for the transmission for both of these engines include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic.

A larger, five-door Thar with additional options such as a sunroof, dual-zone air conditioning, and a computerized driver’s display is also being developed. It is anticipated to make its debut in 2024’s second half.

Price and Rivals of Thar

The Mahindra Thar is available for purchase for between Rs 11.25 lakh and Rs 17.60 lakh (ex-showroom), with the rear-wheel-drive versions costing between Rs 11.25 lakh and Rs 14 lakh. Here are all the characteristics of the larger Thar’s rear profile that was photographed in the most recent spy unit.

Exterior

5-door Mahindra Thar

The most striking similarity between it and the contemporary 3-door Thar is from the back. It has the same bumper style, vertically positioned rectangular LED tail lights, and a spare wheel located on the tailgate.

With its circular headlights (now LED units with ring-like LED DRLs) and bumper design, the front profile is even identical to the three-door model. There are slight modifications to the front grille. But the fog lamps are still halogen lights.

Its side features the same alloy wheel style and two more doors for the comfort of the backseat passengers. Nevertheless, it is from this perspective that the SUV’s extended wheelbase becomes apparent.

Safety & Features

5-door Mahindra Thar

Recently, a detailed spy photo of the 5-door Thar’s interior revealed a larger touchscreen infotainment system and a fully digital driver’s display, both of which are probably 10.25-inch displays. In addition to these screens, it has a single-pane sunroof, automated climate control, Type-C charging connections, an auto-dimming IRVM, and wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

The Mahindra SUV is anticipated to be equipped with electronic stability control (ESC), front and rear parking sensors, ISOFIX child seat anchors, a rearview camera, and up to six airbags for further safety. Upgrading the 5-door Thar to a higher model can also add a 360-degree camera.

Powertrain

5-door Mahindra Thar

The Mahindra Thar 5-door will be available with the same 2-liter turbo-petrol and 2.2-liter diesel engine options as its 3-door counterpart. The three-door variant of these engines offers 152 PS (petrol) and 132 PS (diesel). They’ll probably arrive at a higher tune in the 5-door Thar, though. The longer model will probably be available with both 4-wheel-drive (4WD) and rear-wheel-drive (RWD) configurations.

Expected Price & Rivals

The 5-door Mahindra Thar is anticipated to go on sale later this year at a starting price of Rs 15 lakh (ex-showroom). It will directly compete with the planned 5-door Force Gurkha and serve as a high-end substitute for the Maruti Jimny.

Every now and then, new spy images of the elongated Thar appear online (still camouflaged), and the most recent ones provide new information on its design, interiors, and features. Here is what we know about the larger Mahindra Thar so far.

Exterior

The 5-door Thar has a similar look to the smaller version, with only slight changes to the grille and an updated signature for the round headlights. We can also see the existence of front parking sensors.

Aside from the two additional doors, the side profile features 19-inch alloy wheels with a distinct design from the 3-door variant. The back aspect appears to be intact, with the spare wheel positioned on the tailgate.

Interior

Mahindra Thar 5-Door

The first thing you notice inside the cabin is the dashboard’s new dual-tone black and brown decor. This dashboard also includes a larger touchscreen entertainment system (perhaps a 10.25-inch display), similar to the one found in the new XUV400 electric SUV. This screen will most likely support wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, as well as Mahindra’s ArdenoX connected car technologies.

The front seats are the same as in the three-door variant, but the driver and front passenger each get their own arm rests.

The rear seats have been redesigned for the 5-door Thar and now seat three people, including a headrest for the middle person. They also get a fold-out center armrest, which most likely includes cupholders.

Features

Aside from the larger touchscreen, the 5-door Thar gets a digital driver’s display (perhaps a 10.25-inch), a single pane sunroof, a type-C charging outlet in the front, automated climate control, rear AC vents, an electric fuel cap release, and an auto-dimming IRVM.

In terms of safety, the 5-door Thar is slated to include six airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control (ESC), front and rear parking sensors, ISOFIX child seat anchors, a rearview camera, and a 360-degree camera in higher-end models.

Powertrain

Mahindra will offer the larger Thar with two conventional engine options: a 2-litre turbo-petrol engine and a 2.2-litre diesel engine. While these are the same engines as the three-door variant, with 152 PS (petrol) and 132 PS (diesel), they will have higher output figures. The 5-door Thar will most likely come in both RWD and 4WD configurations.

Price & Rivals

Mahindra Thar 5-Door

The Mahindra Thar 5-door is scheduled to be launched later this year, with a starting price of Rs 15 lakh. With its size and performance, it will be a step up from the sub-4m Maruti Jimny and a more capable competitor to the impending 5-door Force Gurkha.
